Show 2011

(To see more of our work, please click on the main Gallery page)

The following pictures are photos of our display garden at the
2011 Northwest Flower & Garden Show.

We took pictures during the preparation, the show and the take-down.
Our garden had two halves, the "Wonderland" and the "Labyrinth". Our plans were that Cedar Grove Composting was in charge of the Labyrinth section for the most part and our team was focusing on the Wonderland areas. In the end we just all ended up doing everything together, laughing, working, stressing out, crying and rejoicing all as one.

We want to thank our volunteer helpers:
students at Edmonds Community College; and at Lake Washington Technical College;
our partners Cedar Grove Composting
and Stewardship Partners from Seattle. Thank you!

About the 2011 Garden:

Alice In Wonderland & Alice's Labyrinth

“The first Thing I've got to do is to grow to my right size again and the second Thing is to find my way to that lovely garden.”  - Lewis Carroll

Today we face many unpredictable personal and environmental challenges and a garden can be a sanctuary for contemplation and enjoyment.

We need to think “outside the rabbit hole” and in our garden you will see creative and unique ways to do this.  So will you think BIG... or small?  Relax, enjoy the garden, and consider which paths you will choose going forward in the world.

"Then it seemed like falling into a labyrinth: we thought we were at the finish, but our way bent ‘round and we found ourselves, as it were, back at the beginning, and just as far from that which we were seeking at first." SOCRATES

In striving for a sustainable society, we learn of the distance we still must travel. As one walks through Alice’s Labyrinth, one will reflect upon how individual steps will result in getting closer to true sustainability. The theme is to covet resources, replenish the earth, and create healthy habitats

More Information

Our garden won a Bronze Medal. It was filled with creative ideas that all related to the main Show Theme: "Once Upon A Time".

Alice following the White Rabbit fell through the rabbit hole. She drank the 'drink me', ate the 'eat me' and experienced being as GIANT as a house and as tiny as an ant. Alice tumbled across logs and found the Mad Hatters' party in full swing.
When she made it to the Queen's labyrinth, she finally remembered what Absalom, the blue caterpillar told her about just being herself and was able to free herself from the nightmarish unbalanced world. She found her way back home!

Our garden was filled with oversized elements, such as seeds 16 feet tall, towering ferns and tropical plants. Human sized guard cards watched over the walkways. The massive entry led the visitors into the labyrinth. The site was designed to also show balancing solutions within the chaotic and unsustainable madness of this Wonderland.

Rain was caught on the green roof that covered Mad Hatter's table with an overflow moving the water into a rain garden. All of the hardscaping was permeable: mulch path, and the Queen's chess patio was built with pervious pavers.
Native and hardy plant material provided examples of colorful sustainable gardening in several areas.

We had a fancy rabbit cage for the little rabbit. The rabbit was raised with dogs and children, so she was used to lots of activity.

Please take your time to look at the structures and other design elements in our garden. Construction design drawings for some of these items are available for purchase on our 'Store' page.
